“The remediation rate for first year college students is abysmal,” comments Susan Mulcaire, president of Tween Publishing. “Generally, it’s not a matter of intelligence — the student is smart enough to be in college. The problem is they never learned strategies for managing their time and workload, nor did they learn productive study skills. Anybody who works with kids probably knows this already, but “six-year-olds show clear bias in favor of a group they belong to. However, hatred for opposing groups doesn’t show up until two years later. They further found that eight-year-old boys feel, or at least act upon, this disdain far more strongly than eight-year-old girls.” The study, conducted by German researchers, highlights the need for classroom guidance lessons in co-existence and cooperation for kids between the ages of 6 and 8.
I wasn’t aware until I read this article that bilingual students are diagnosed with learning disabilities at a higher rate than native speakers are, but with that knowledge in mind, it’s helpful to know that there’s an assessment tool that can help lower the rate of misdiagnosis. “the Bilingual English-Spanish Assessment (BESA), … will help speech-language pathologists differentiate limited exposure to English from underlying language impairments among children ages 4 to 6 years, 11 months.”
This teacher has a brilliant method of ferreting out the sometimes opaque (and always shifting) social dynamics within her classroom and getting help for those kids who need it.
