School counselors are all too familiar with the bystander effect. Here’s an article that discusses how it may have impacted events in the Steubenville rape case. There’s also some good analysis of some of the conflicting messages girls get as they grow up and which likely colored their responses to the victim.

The circle’s coming round again, as it does from time to time, from pushing all students toward college to encouraging more of them to participate in vocational training at the high school level. Orange County, California high schools have developed a number of innovative and popular programs that may be of interest to others considering a move in this direction.

And, as one non-sequitur leads to another, I was thinking the other day about how much time kids spend in cars with their parents, and about how they’re often limited to listening to whatever’s on the radio. Car time is actually a great time to widen a child’s horizons, be it through folk-music, storytelling, or history. To that end, parents might find it helpful to know about some kid-friendly podcasts that their little-ones would enjoy. Note:  this is one of those all-too-rare occasions when the best part of the article is the comment trail.
